Some slow-moving businesses and government agencies may not accept documents over email, forcing you to fax them in. If you are forced to send a fax, you can do it from your computer for free.

We’ve previously covered ways to electronically sign documents without printing and scanning them. With this process, you can digitally sign a document and fax it to a business — all on your computer and without any printing required.

How Fax Machines Work (and Why They’re So Inconvenient)

This isn’t as easy as it should be. Fax machines are all connected to the plain old telephone lines. When you use a standard fax machine, that fax machine places a phone call to the number you specify. The fax machine at the destination number answers and the document is transmitted over a telephone call.

This process was invented before the Internet and seems laughably archaic at this point. To perform a fax, a person may type up a document, print it out, and scan it into the fax machine which sends it over the phone line. The person receiving the fax may then scan the faxed document and turn it back into a digital file. They’ve come full circle — the document was sent from one computer to another computer with much additional work and lost image quality.

Ideally, you’d be able to submit a document via email or a more secure online method. Many businesses consider fax a secure method of transmitting documents, but it really isn’t — if someone was snooping on the phone line, they could easily intercept all the faxed documents.

There’s no way to connect to a fax machine directly over the Internet, as the fax machine is only connected to telephone lines. To perform a fax online, we’ll need some sort of gateway that accepts documents via the Internet and transmits the document to a fax machine. That’s where the below services come in. Give them a document and they’ll do the annoying work of dialing up the fax machine and sending your document over the telephone line.

You Could Fax With Just Your Computer, But…

You could skip the below services, of course. Microsoft Windows even contains a Fax and Scan application that allows you to send faxes. The catch is that you’d need your computer connected to the phone line — yes, this means that you’d need a dial-up fax modem. You’d also need a landline telephone connection and you’d have to tell people to stay off the phone when you’re sending faxes, just like in the old dial-up Internet days. Of course, if you were faxing a lot, you could pay for a a dedicated fax telephone line — this might even be necessary if you were receiving a lot of faxes.

This obviously isn’t ideal. Sure, if you need to send quite a few faxes, go ahead and buy a fax machine or modem and hook it up to your landline. But you probably don’t need to send and receive faxes this often — you hopefully just need to send the occasional fax whenever you bump into an organization that’s stuck in the past.

Scan the Document or Use an Existing Digital File

The basic process is simple. First, you’ll need to scan the document you want to fax, just as if you were going to send that document over email. if you don’t have a scanner lying around, you may want to try scanning it with your smartphone. If the document is already a file on your computer, congratulations — you don’t have to scan anything.

With the document now in digital form, you can send it along to a service that will do the annoying fax work for you.

Send Faxes Online, Free

There are so many online fax services out there that it’s hard to make an informed decision about which one to choose. The first thing to consider is what kind of a user you are, how often you’ll be faxing, and what features you need.

Power User: RingCentral Fax

If you are going to be sending sensitive faxes all the time, or you work for a company and you’re trying to choose a service, RingCentral Fax, which is partially owned by Cisco and AT&T, is probably the best choice for your needs, especially since they have a lot of great security features and support for multiple users with separate fax lines.

It has all the features you can imagine, including integrations with Outlook, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and you can even get a toll-free number. It also has a lot of security features that would be useful for businesses or people that are transmitting secure information.

Of course, if you just want to send a few faxes, you can sign up for one of their cheap plans that start under $7 per month… and then just cancel after a month or two.

Occasional User

If you do need to send the occasional fax, we recommend MyFax, which lets you send up to 10 free pages without having to pay. This doesn’t sound like much, but it’s more pages per month than most people have to fax per year. If you do need to send more pages each month, you canupgrade to a regular plan.

You’ll need to confirm your email address in order to send the free fax.

Receiving Faxes

If you do need to receive faxes, you’ll have to sign up for a paid service. The service will need to establish a dedicated phone number for your fax line, and that costs money. RingCentral,MyFax, and many other services will do this if you pay.

Luckily, you should at least be able to get a free trial — RingCentral offers 30 days of free fax receiving, for example.

There are many fax services to use, and if you just need to send the occasional fax, you can manage to do that for free, but if you want to receive a fax, you’ll end up needing to sign up for a trial account. You can always cancel if you want.

First Steam Machines on sale from Alienware and Cyberpower

Alienware Steam Machine
Alienware’s Steam Machine will be sent to buyers in October

The first Steam Machines – an attempt to bring PC gaming to a wider audience – are available to pre-order.

PC makers Alienware and Cyberpower have both announced machines that will be sent out to buyers in October.

Several Steam Machines will be out this year, an attempt by games publisher Valve to compete with consoles such as the Xbox and PlayStation.

Many analysts are not convinced it poses a threat to those well-established brands.

Steam is a hugely popular gaming platform and shop for the PC market. In September 2013, owner Valve announced it was to work with manufacturers to develop Steam Machines in the hope it would encourage PC gaming in the living room – a domain all but sewn up by consoles.

‘Expensive’

“I don’t think it will disrupt the established order in the living room,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games research at analysts IHS.

“Our view is that it will be a good few years before the price point and performance equation for Steam Machines means they will compete significantly with consoles.”

Valve Steam Machine controller
Steam Machines are designed to be played with Valve’s custom controller

Alienware’s machine will cost $449 (£300) while Cyberpower’s will be priced at $499. However, buyers will need to wait until November, and pay extra, to use Valve’s official Steam Machine controller which features two haptic-feedback trackpads.

The controller has been designed as an alternative to the typical PC gaming set-up of keyboard and mouse.

Both machines can be souped-up to offer more hardware power.

Mr Harding-Rolls questioned the companies’ strategy.

“Who is going to buy an expensive Steam Machine today?

“Steam users who are power users of Steam and spend lots on PC and want to connect it to the TV… a good proportion will have done that already. So I think the opportunity here is relatively small.”

‘Robust market’

However, games analyst Nicholas Lovell told the BBC that Steam Machines may be able to capitalise by iterating more quickly than the established games consoles which are typically not upgraded for several years.

“Steam Machines aren’t locked down once every six years,” he said.

“There will be iterations. There’ll be early adopters – within a year, that will have been improved. Those iterations will happen at speed.”

While sales of desktop PCs have declined in recent years, PC gaming is still robust.

“If you look at spending on the PC platform, it’s the biggest platform, by spend, globally. Steam as a platform is in rude health.”

T-Mobile Suspends ZTE Zmax Sales Because People Are Idiots

T-Mobile put ZTE’s phablet on ice because people are trying to yank out the battery. One problem: it’s not removable.
Listen, people. I know you like removable batteries on phones. But you can’t just will them into existence.

TMONews revealed yesterday that T-Mobile suspended sales of the ZTE Zmax$252.00 at T-Mobile phablet after only seven months. In the comments, several people speculated as to why: were there a lot of defective units? What about an ongoing patent infringement case?

It turns out the reason is that people are literally hacking into the phone. Or hacking at the phone.
According to sources close to ZTE, T-Mobile had to suspend sales because customers were trying to remove the non-removable batteries on the phones. Obviously, that’s dangerous. The back cover is clipped on but not glued on, and people like this guy are using “a knife and a small screwdriver” to lever it off, potentially puncturing the battery cell and hurting themselves in the process.
It’s unclear why people are doing this—maybe to hard reset their devices?—but ZTE strongly suggests taking your phone into a T-Mobile store if it’s misbehaving rather than trying to yank the battery out yourself.

T-Mobile complained to ZTE, and ZTE is trying to figure out how to prevent folks from getting their hands on the batteries.

An in depth look at the differences Software, Shareware, Freeware and Open Source AND Nagware, Bannerware, Adware and Bloatware

An in depth look at the differences Software, Shareware, Freeware and Open Source AND Nagware, Bannerware, Adware and Bloatware

First of all you should know that SOFTWARE is a generic and “all encompassing” term for all of the above. In short SOFTWARE means a piece of code that achieves a certain objective such as a paint programs invoicing programs and web browsers (and even games) to name a few. Software implies that it is not a hard device that you could simply hold in your hand but more data and programming code that might be stored on any computerized device; such as a Hard Drive, Flash Drive, or even the Cloud.

A good place to download and evaluate Software is from Download.com. When downloading please always remember to look at the popularity of the item, the ratings and always, always read the reviews that are conveniently located below the description of the product.

SOFTWARE can also be described more specifically by its marketing platform or the mechanics of how the Programmer is compensated financially.

These terms can positively reflect the industry by words such as SHAREWARE, FREEWARE AND OPENSOURCE
OR Negatively by terms such as Adware, Bannerware, Bloatware, or Nagware which are further defined at the end of this article

An example of popware, adware, bannerware

An example of popware, adware, bannerware

So let’s break it down…

SHAREWARE as defined appropriately by Google is, SOFTWARE that is available FREE of charge and often distributed informally for EVALUATION PURPOSES, after which a fee may be requested for continued use.

BUT before Google DEFINED SHAREWARE…the “ASSOCIATION OF SOFTWARE PROFESSIONALS” really prescribed some terms of what SHARWARE SHOULD BE IDENTIFIED AS:

IN my recollection from some 20 years before and still stands true today at heart…

  • SHAREWARE, SHOULD BE… Adware, Banner-ware and Nag-ware FREE.

  • TRUE “SHAREWARE”, should have NO limitations before purchasing the actual product!

  • SHAREWARE, may have a time limit of 30 days before these supposed limited features (like saving only one page OF a document or one image out of a batch filter) are incorporated.

FREEWARE, Is the next step in software evolution~ FREEWARE is just that.. no time restrictions, no banners or annoying ads, but truly FREE SOFTWARE that you can use! SOME OF THE BEST SOFTWARE IN THE WORLD IS TRUELY FREEWARE!!

WHY? Some people might ask that a programmer or company would create a piece of really good software and not ask for a nickel in return?

  • Start Up programmers wanting to get a name for themselves or companies that need name recognition.

  • Companies that ask you to participate in usage stat or enhancing the community experience might data mine anonymously your usage performance of the software.

  • Because they believe they are the best at what they do and do not have an investor to spread the word or advertise with such as name brands like Microsoft or Adobe to back them.

A good place to download Freeware Applications are:
http://www.freewarefiles.com/screenshot.php?programid=13617

or one of the original file repositories such as TuCows
http://www.tucows.com/list_detail.html?id=9

Some  good example of Freeware are:
VLC Media Player which is lighter and plays more files than WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER
Irfanview is an image viewer and editor which allows you to view hundreds of different file type.
Gimp an Image editor often compared to a scaled down version of the Industry Standards – Adobe Photoshop

Here is a screen shot of the very popular Media Player VLC

FREEWARE Screenshot of the popular media Player VLC

FREEWARE Screenshot of the popular media Player VLC

Which leads me to the Grand Finale of all Software “Open Source”

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE. is just like FREEWARE EXCEPT THAT it allows for anyone to inspect or change the code at any given time and to use it and share it freely with everyone.

One Example of this is the ever so popular Linux (pronounced Lie-Nux eg: vowel consonant vowel from Linus Torvalds) the originator of the freely open source operating system based on UNIX.

NEGATIVE INDUSTRY SHAREWARE TERMS – THESE ARE NOT NORMALLY ASSOCIATED WITH ANY TYPE OF SHAREWARE, FREEWARE OR OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION

NAGWARE – a popup to “buy this product”, an “extra button to press” before using the product or “x amount of seconds to wait” before the product starts.

ADWARE AND BANNER-WARE- means that every time the software launches, the product will display ads that will ask you to purchase anything and everything from how to lose weight to buying a popular game or song; or even more software. This is another form of the revenue stream for the company allowing you to try the product before you purchase it. Usually once the product is purchased a code will be sent to the consumer that will remove the annoying ads while using the product.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ADWARE CAN SOMETIMES ACT A AS VIRUS AND POPUP ADS EVEN AFTER TERMINATING THE PROGRAM.

BLOATWARE – according to the UrbanDisctionary.com is defined as:

A piece of software, hardware or website that attempts to do too much and becomes utterly useless for users. An example of bloatware would be a word processing application that also tries to be your page layout program, drawing tool, and web browser; absorbing half your hard drive and all your RAM in the process.
